1.1 RATIONALE

Instagram Reels rolled out to the majority of users in August 2020. The feature is touted as a response to the popularity of TikTok and a way to create similar content within the Instagram platform .

Unlike IGTV, Instagram realized that for Reels to be effective and used regularly, the feature had to be built into the existing Instagram interface. In this way, Reels is very similar to Instagram Stories—and you even access the Reels camera from the same Stories camera.

1.2 RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

  • To analyze how Instagram Reels have changed content creation in digital media

  • To explore the Impact of influencers and increase in reach through Reels

  • Understanding the role of Maslow’s Hierarchy on Instagram

1.3 RESEARCH APPROACH

This was an exploratory study to examine the role of Instagram reels in content creation. This research used reflections and learnings from Secondary/Desk Research. The secondary research consisted of reading information from other sources. It included readings in the form of scholarly papers, website and journal articles, books, eBooks and essays on the topic. It also involved reading blogs, social media discussions and other information available across all media platforms. The primary research will include:

  • Questionnaires, surveys and online polls.

  • Focus groups to understand people‘s attitude and opinions on these new forms of visual communication.

  • Social Media observations of Reels and its effect.

Conclusion

This paper has explored the role of Instagram Reels in content creation and communication in digital media. By conducting thorough secondary research through articles, online credible sources, publications and books it can be concluded that the reels have changed content creation on Instagram and the way influencers and brands communicate on digital media.

Through the literature review it has been established that the influencers and Instagram users are now focusing more on making content short so that the audience remains engaged. Influencers prefer to make these short form videos as they can be easily created with the help of all the features on reels and also the production value of these are low. Micro and Macro influencers both types of influencers are creating different types of Reels rather than the IGTV and normal videos. Instagram is a convergence of millions of people seeking to represent themselves and aspects of their lives to their friends and, as with numerous accounts, the public. Users generally want to post to feel some kind of social acceptance from a group or a particular individual.

Through polls, surveys and Interviews it has been gathered that most people on social media now prefer to watch short form videos as the attention span of users has reduced. Most influencers believe that micro bloggers are benefitting from the introduction of reels, as unlike other kinds of posts on Instagram, reels also come up onto other users' profiles who might not be even following them, thus increasing their reach. Some viewers believe that there are still some things that can be introduced on Reels that can be useful for a lot of bloggers and influencers, like adding transitions and better editing tools on the application, or by adding a genre feature where viewers can see their preferred content.
